Wednesday Cheese Curds: Packers don’t need Robert Saleh to help their defense

There is a strong and obvious connection between the Packers and recently fired New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh.

Saleh is close friends with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. Their careers are intertwined dating back to their shared days with the Houston Texans, and Saleh was the best man in LaFleur’s wedding. Now that Saleh is a coaching free agent, it makes sense to connect the dots between him and the Packers.

Logical sense, that is, but not practical sense. Bringing in Saleh would only undermine new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who’s still finding his feet in his first NFL defensive coordinator gig. And, for that matter, doing a pretty good job.

Sure, the pass rush leaves much to be desired, but the Packers’ defense is limiting scoring and taking the ball away at a prodigious rate. If the Packers’ highly paid pass rushers start playing like they’re expected to, they might really have something cooking.

Saleh, a former coworker of Hafley’s, might have valuable perspective, but he’d be coming in at a time when Hafley is still trying to put his own stamp on the defense. For good or ill, Hafley deserves the chance to run the show himself without the head coach’s best friend looking over his shoulder.

Hafley himself said it’s going to take about half a season to assess everything on defense, and introducing a new perspective in that time period is probably just needlessly muddying the waters.
