Following the New England Patriots’ 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Jacoby Brissett addressed the team in the locker room. His message: there’s plenty of time to turn this around.
“It’s a long season. To be hopeful,” Brissett said of his message. “When we started this climb, we never thought it was going to be just — you’re on the escalator, you’re just going up automatically. We knew there were going to be bumps in the road, we were going to get knocked down, and be tired, and be hurt. That doesn’t stop the climb, it just puts a little adversity in the climb.
“Told the guys like man, that’s what we’re built for in this room. We got the men in this room that you go back and look at everybody’s story — not everybody but a lot of players’ story — that how they got into that room. It wasn’t easy to get there. To reflect on that and to understand this is a long season.”
Brissett’s struggles to start the year continued on Sunday, as the quarterback completed 19-of-32 passed for just 168 yards and a touchdown. The veteran also also put the ball on the ground three times — losing one — and threw his first interception of the year, which went back the other way for six.
“We had an in-cut coming open behind the the backers. Hats off to Fred [Warner], he made a great play,” Brissett said post game. “I think I put a bad ball out there and just a better throw would would have picked up the first down.”
With the challenges continuing to face the offense with Brissett under center, the noise only gets louder for rookie Drake Maye to take over at quarterback. Head coach Jerod Mayo, however, did not seem to be closer to a positional change.
“Look, at this point, Jacoby is our starting quarterback,” Mayo said after the game. “I haven’t watched any film or anything like that. He’s been a great leader. He just broke the huddle down after I talked to the guys. We got to watch the film. We have a long flight to go back and watch the film, and we’re always evaluating every single position.”
For now, Brissett will continue to turn the page and keeping moving — and getting up after taking another beating in the loss. That will start with a return to Gillette Stadium for a Week 5 divisional game against the Miami Dolphins.
“Nobody’s gonna come and save us and pick our head up for us, we got to do it ourselves,” he said. “That’s the best part about being in this league and being early in the season because you have, not a lot of time, but you got time to pick yourself up and lick your wounds and go back to work. Because you got another week next week.”
