Other Giant observations

How Saquon Barkley went from ‘Giant for life’ to division rival Eagles | ESPN.com

One thing Barkley is having trouble picturing is some kind of over-the-top reaction from the Giants faithful.

“Maybe I’m naive, but I think it’s over. That chapter’s closed,” he said before Week 6. “I truly don’t care no more, and I’m pretty sure fans don’t care no more.”

War awaits Saquon Barkley — and his ex-Giants teammates won’t hold anything back | New York Post

Dexter Lawrence won’t be showing any mercy to Saquon Barkley, star Eagles running back, when they collide Sunday at 1 at MetLife Stadium. There are certain to be Giants fans who won’t either.

“I think he did a lot of good for this organization, but we got some tough fans and they’re gonna bring him in however they feel it’s right by them,” Lawrence said. “I appreciate what he did for this organization and who he was as a teammate and a person to me, most importantly. But Sunday is war and he knows that.”

Of interior defensive linemen, only Cameron Heyward and Chris Jones have a higher grade than Dexter Lawrence‘s 89.6.

Giants were right to pay Andrew Thomas — but injuries have made his contract look bad so far | NJ.com

But then Thomas blossomed into a star in 2021 and 2022 (the first year for Gettleman’s replacement, Joe Schoen).

And after 2022, when Thomas was initially eligible for a lucrative second contract, Schoen gave it to him. The move made sense, given Thomas’ elite production the previous two seasons. But now, injuries have wrecked both his 2023 and 2024 seasons. So his contract, at this point, looks rough.

Tyler Nubin Among Giants Defense’s Best in This Key Stat | SI.com

Nubin’s run on tackles continued this past Sunday night with another nine takedowns (five solo), including one for a loss, in the 17-7 primetime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. With these outings, the rookie has isolated himself from the rest of the secondary and now pushed himself to the top of New York’s leaderboard in total stops, where he is currently positioned with 39 heading into Week 7’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Daniel Jones can still get himself into trouble when facing pressure, as he did while trying to get a pass off with B.J. Hill in his face inside the red zone in the first quarter. The ball was tipped up in the air and intercepted.

Without Malik Nabers, the only thing Jones really had going for him was the quarterback run, which was more physical than necessary as he ran into defenders instead of trying to avoid them.

Brian Daboll’s hot seat is cool by suddenly tumultuous NFC standards | New York Post

The Giants are in last place and having all sorts of trouble scoring. Yet Brian Daboll had more job security than two NFC East head coaches.

4. Brian Daboll, New York Giants. Every offensive possession feels like such an uphill climb. It’s particularly bad at home where the Giants are 0-3, averaging 9.3 points per game and have scored just one touchdown.

That’s embarrassing, and if it continues, it could be enough to force co-owner John Mara to make a change he really doesn’t want to make. Daboll will get the full season and he probably doesn’t even need to make the playoffs to survive. But there has to be some obvious improvement, especially on offense. It would really help if he could get some better play from Jones.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers trade target: Azeez Ojulari, OLB, New York Giants. With Brian Burns and, when healthy, Kayvon Thibodeaux being the pillars of New York’s pass rush, Ojulari is expendable as he plays on the final year of his rookie contract. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers could use an extra pass rusher, and Ojulari has three sacks and four quarterback hits through six games this season.

20. New York Giants: G Sam Cosmi. At times, Kadarius Toney would flash the kind of potential that made him worth the investment. But all too often, they were just that: flashes. Instead, the Giants take advantage of a stacked interior lineman class and grab Cosmi, our fifth-ranked guard in 2023.

Dallas Goedert, Jordan Mailata out of practice Wednesday | Pro Football Talk

Tight end Dallas Goedert and left tackle Jordan Mailata were both out of practice because of hamstring injuries. Goedert was limited to three snaps in last Sunday’s win over the Browns and Mailata played 49 of the team’s 62 offensive snaps.

Defensive tackle Milton Williams (ankle) was the only other Eagles player to miss practice. Linebacker Oren Burks (groin), linebacker Jalyx Hunt (ankle), and cornerback Darius Slay were the team’s limited participants in practice. Safety Sydney Brown (knee), tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (abdomen), and wide receiver Ainias Smith (ankle) were all listed as full participants.

Hottest NFL Hot Takes After 6 Weeks of the 2024 Season | Bleacher Report

After barely hanging on to beat the lowly Browns on Sunday, the Eagles are now 4-8 in their last 12 games. Prior to this slump, they were a phony 10-1 thanks to a series of underwhelming victories over soft opponents. Really, they haven’t been the same since losing Super Bowl LVII to the Chiefs. In fact, they’ve been outscored by a 34-point margin over the course of 23 regular-season and playoff games since that night in February 2023. It’s time to conclude that 2022 was an anomaly for both Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni. This Eagles team lacks “it,” and at the very least they ought to consider a coaching change soon.

Outside of one really bad performance against Tampa — Todd Bowles can have that effect — the Eagles (3-2) have stacked yards. The ability to move the ball should give way to points at some stage. Philadelphia has racked up 400-plus yards twice and gone over the 360-yard mark four times in five games. That’s not terrible offense. It’s one that needs to finish. Despite averaging 21.2 points per game (18th), Philly is ranked 12th in offensive DVOA, per FTN’s metrics, 11th in EPA per play and fifth in rush EPA per play. The building blocks are there.
