In a rainy “Monday Night Football” matchup on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs extended their record to 8-0 with a 30-24 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, setting a new franchise record with 14 consecutive victories as they continue their attempt to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.

The Chiefs’ offense opened the game with an efficient drive that nearly ended with a 33-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Xavier Worthy — but his feet touched the white chalk of the sideline at the goal line, nullifying his catch. Two plays later, Patrick Mahomes was sacked, ending the drive just outside field goal range.

On their first drive, the Buccaneers managed a first down — but three plays later, the Kansas City defense forced a stop. Mecole Hardman went down the sideline with a 33-yard punt return to put the Chiefs at the Tampa Bay 47. Kansas City quickly moved to the 30 — but then lost 10 yards on a reverse that Tampa Bay’s defense sniffed out. The Chiefs settled for a 40-yard Harrison Butker field goal that gave them a 3-0 lead.

The Kansas City defense thought they had sacked the Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield for a three-and-out, but a defensive holding penalty against Trent McDuffie kept the drive alive. Tampa Bay marched down the field, completing a 13-play drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by Kansas City native Rachaad White that gave the Buccaneers a 7-3 lead.

On the next drive, the Chiefs had to convert two third downs — but the second was a 35-yard triple-coverage pass to DeAndre Hopkins that put Kansas City on the Buccaneers’ 3-yard line. Hopkins ended the drive with a touchdown catch at the back of the end zone to give the Chiefs a 10-7 lead with 4:08 left in the second quarter.

This time, the Kansas City defense completed the three-and-out — but in the last 1:48 of the half, neither team could get anything done. The teams went into halftime with the Chiefs still leading 10-7.

The Buccaneers began the third quarter with Bucky Irving’s 46-yard kickoff return to midfield — and then a 15-yard horse collar tackle penalty against Joshua Williams got them to the 22-yard line. Two plays later, Mayfield found tight end Cade Otton for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving Tampa Bay a 14-10 lead.

The Buccaneers’ defense then wrapped up a three-and-out with their fourth sack of the game, starting their next drive at their own 41-yard line. An 18-yard pass to Otton immediately put them into Kansas City territory, while a converted third-and-12 put the Chiefs’ defense on its heels. But then a 15-yard facemask penalty took away Tampa Bay’s momentum; they couldn’t convert a third-and-18. Chase McLaughlin’s 47-yeard field goal gave the Buccaneers a 17-10 lead.

As the rain picked up, Kansas City shifted to its running game, depending on Kareem Hunt to move the chains down inside Tampa Bay’s 10-yard line. On third-and-goal, Mahomes flipped the ball to running back Samaje Perine in the end zone to tie the score at 17-17 — but he tweaked his left ankle as he stepped awkwardly on the throw.

The Chiefs’ defense collected a three-and-out, getting the ball back to the offense at their own 22 — with Mahomes well enough to conduct a 15-play, 8:26 drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown to pass to Hopkins that gave Kansas City a 24-17 lead with 4:20 left in the game.

Kansas City got another three-and-out. Starting at its 35-yard line with 2:39 remaining, the Chiefs were content to kill clock and allow the Buccaneers to use up their timeouts. But on fourth-and-11, a screen pass to Perine fell incomplete. Starting at its 29-yard line, Tampa drew a holding call on first down, but worked through it with a pass to midfield and kept going. Mayfield scrambled for a first down inside the 20 with 44 seconds left. Then he found Trey Palmer for a catch-and-run to the 1-yard line. On second down, Ryan Miller caught a touchdown pass to tie the score at 24-24.

Starting at their own 30 with 27 seconds (and three timeouts), the Chiefs needed 25 yards to get into field goal range. After getting nine yards on first down, two passes fell incomplete. Matt Araiza’s punt drained the clock, putting overtime on the agenda.

Kansas City won the coin toss and started at its 30-yard line. Taking what the defense would give them, the Chiefs marched down the field. Travis Kelce’s 15th catch of the game put them at the 11. Kelce caught another ball to get to the 1-yard line — and Hunt punched it in for a 30-24 victory.
